FMCSA Spotlight ... Let's Keep it Moving! - May 2012

Customer’s Responsibilities

As a customer, you have a role in making your move a smooth relocation experience. You should:

  • Review the www.protectyourmove.gov website, including the “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet and the “Ready to Move” brochure;
  • Avoid any mover that doesn’t display its USDOT and/or MC Docket number on its website or other advertisements as required by Federal regulations;
  • Check the mover’s USDOT or MC Docket number to ensure it has valid authority to operate at www.protectyourmove.gov before you hire the mover;
  • Read all moving documents issued by the mover or broker;
  • Not sign blank documents;
  • Be available at the time of pickup and delivery of your shipment. If you are not available, appoint a representative to act on your behalf;
  • Promptly notify your mover if something has changed regarding your shipment (i.e. move dates, additional items);
  • Be prepared to make payment prior to delivery, in the amount required and in the form of payment agreed to with the mover; and
  • Promptly file claims for loss, damage or delays with your mover, if necessary.
